Mar 31, 2015 · All 8.5” 10-bolt rears have two squared-off ears at the 4 and 6-o’clock on the bottom of the pumpkin, that is the #1 tell-tale sign, if you don’t have those, you don’t have an 8.5” 10-bolt. Up until 1988, all GM 8.5” 10-bolts had 28-spline axles, which are thinner than and not as strong as the upgraded 30-spline axles.

The 8.5 10 bolt that was used in the second gen Camaro and Firebird is a very good rear end. It has 28 spline axles, but it can be easily upgraded to the 30 spline axles. It has a ring gear that is 3/8 inch smaller than the 12 bolt, but the pinion shaft and pinion bearings are the same as the 12 bolt.
Sep 18, 2013 · Right now I have the 14 bolt and am still working on getting the 60. I just cant see spending tons of money on axles like dynatrac when I feel 14/60 combo is a very good setup. I know that the 14 bolt wont have the clearance but at the same time it wont cost as much to build it up.
